On July 1, 2023. Officers from the Fox Point Police Department were dispatched to a retail theft in progress at Best Buy. Dispatch advised a heavy-set black male, wearing a black t-shirt and navy blue pants, was observed leaving Best Buy with several boxes in his pants which had not been paid for. The subject exited the store and entered into a white Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle. While enroute, an officer located a vehicle matching the description and conducted a traffic stop. The Bayside Police Department was also called as backup. An officer approached the driver (Anthony), and another officer approached the passenger (Mellvin). Anthony was questioned on if he was at Best Buy but he stated that he just left McDonald’s. The officer at the passenger side of the vehicle noticed cameras and other store products still in their packaging on the floorboard and requested that Melvin hand it to him. While responding, an officer noticed a CVS employee on the phone pointing up the street and believed that the suspects may have also been involved in a theft at the CVS. Officers asked both Anthony and Melvin if they stole the products, but they both denied being involved in a theft. Both Anthony and Melvin presented their Wisconsin Identification card to officers. They were then informed that an officer was currently at Best Buy reviewing the security camera footage to see if it was them. An officer asked Anthony to shut the vehicle off and told him that he was going to be placed under arrest. Anthony then put the vehicle in drive and pulled away from the traffic stop. One of the officers was able to get the driver's door partially open while the vehicle pulled away. Law enforcement decided not to chase the vehicle as they had both occupants ID cards. Officers went to Best Buy and CVS to speak with employees. At CVS, the employee said there was a theft and explained that when the suspect (Anthony) left the store, the security alarm went off. The employee said she followed Anthony outside and saw him get into a vehicle across the street with a second subject inside. It was determined that two electric trimmers with a value of $96.83 were stolen. The two trimmers were returned as officers were able to retrieve them from the vehicle before Anthony took off. The employee working did not know how to view the security camera footage but officers went back the next day and were able to identify Anthony as the suspect. At Best Buy, an employee explained that she was alerted by a customer who stated a black male (Anthony) had shoved several boxes of merchandise down his pants. The employee stated she observed a heavier, black male, wearing a black t-shirt with white "Levi's" writing on it and navy blue pants exit the store with noticeable boxes down his pants. Surveillance footage showed the suspect take four surveillance cameras; two Blink Mini Pan-Tilt cameras and two Blink Mini 1-Cameras, for a total of $189.96. Officers were able to positively identify Anthony as the suspect from the security camera footage. Both the driver Anthony and the passenger Melvin received municipal citations in the mail for Obstructing or Resisting Police. Anthony was also issued a summons to appear in court by mail for Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer. He was found guilty and sentenced to 4 years in Prison, 2 years of probation, and ordered to pay $518 in fines.
